On 27 September 2025, the Polish Nationality Self-Government of Miskolc and members of the local Polish community took part in the Independence Relay 2025. The event was held on the running track in Népkert Park, where thirteen participants—children and adults alike—completed the symbolic distance of 1,918 metres, whether by running, jogging or simply walking. The friendly atmosphere was enhanced not only by the shared physical activity but also by refreshments, including bottled water and cereal bars.

The aim of the relay is to commemorate the restoration of Poland’s independence in a meaningful and memorable way. 11 November is one of Poland’s most important national holidays, marking the day in 1918 when the country regained its sovereignty after 123 years of partition between the Russian Empire, Prussia, and the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Today, Poland’s Independence Day is celebrated across the country with military parades, official commemorations and a wide range of cultural events.

The international initiative, launched by the Association “Wspólnota Polska”, encourages Poles and Polish communities around the world to organize local events celebrating this historic anniversary. The relay’s defining feature is the symbolic distance of 1,918 metres, representing the year in which Poland regained its independence. Rather than focusing on competition, these events emphasize shared remembrance, patriotic unity and the strengthening of national identity.

The participants in the Miskolc relay embraced these values, contributing to the international celebration and helping strengthen the bond between Polish communities abroad and their homeland.
